The only areas in which small crops can be grown are in the river valleys. In spite of having the rivers, water is a problem for the people living in these areas. Although there are fresh water springs high in the mountains, they are up to 5 km away and inaccessible. Water is collected from the rivers several times a day. Each trip involves climbing down cliff sides and walking up to 2 ½ hours. It is usually young girls who undertake this onerous task. The lack of water contributes to the hardship and poverty of the people. Jinpa is helping to install piping to bring water from the mountains to the villages.
